Chocolate Hummus

One of the coolest things about my job is that clients from time to time will send me recipes that they want to try out and they think that I’ll like. I love seeing how they embrace their nutrition programs and enjoy trying new things. It’s not the same old chicken and broccoli bro diet, but they actually start searching for ways to include fun things in their eating.

I have a client with several food intolerances and she’s limited on some of the fun treats, just like The Kid is with her allergies. A couple weeks ago, she sent me a link to a vegan chocolate fruit dip that she was going to try. Of course, I was intrigued. What’s there not to like about chocolate and hummus. I’ve never combined them into one, but figured it was worth a try.

The original recipe was made with almond butter, soy milk, dates, and maple syrup. I wanted to lighten it up so I changed the recipe quite a bit. I will point out that I didn’t lighten it up necessarily for fat or calorie reasons, but more for selfish reasons. I wanted to eat more of it. I didn’t want a small little dab of full fat chocolate hummus. I wanted a hummus mountain! So a chocolate hummus mountain I made.

Chocolate Hummus Vegan Chocolate Hummus

  • 1 15 oz can chick peas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup (20g) Hershey’s unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp (9g) PB2 or powdered peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp baking stevia or sugar

Mix all of the ingredients in a blender, Magic Bullet or food processor and blend until smooth.

Makes 12 (31g servings) at 42 calories per serving – 3g protein, 7g carbs, and 1g fat.

If you prefer it sweeter, you can add more sugar. I didn’t mind the taste with just 2 tsps of sugar. I served mine with wheat thin crackers and also plan to put some on my rice cakes. You can dip fruit in it. You can even make a chocolate hummus PB sandwich or maybe chocolate hummus smore’s! You’d never know that there were chick peas in here.

What will you do with your chocolate hummus?
