Until We Meet Again… There Is Just One Thing

Rainbow-BridgeYesterday was a sad day at the Quest Household. Thing Two became the only Thing in our lives with the passing of Thing One. I got Thing One over 16 years ago as an 8 week old puppy. Since then she’s been a faithful friend, greeting me at the door almost every time I walked through it. She’s been with me most of my adult life. She’s seen me through numerous life changing events.

  • Being my first dog
  • Buying my first house
  • Having a baby
  • Getting divorced
  • Moving halfway across the country from my family
  • First days at new jobs
  • First days of school

When we lived in Maryland, we had no backyard so we took endless walks in the evening. She loved finally having a huge backyard when we moved to Texas. The expression on her face as she ran through the snow from one end to the other at top speed can only be described as pure joy. She would spend hours outside laying in the sunshine with the rays warming her fur.

I’m glad that in the last few months she was too blind and deaf to hear us come home so the greetings at the door gradually stopped. It will make coming home in the next few days a little bit easier as we adjust to having only one Thing. I’m very relieved that she chose her time to go instead of me having to make a horrible choice.

We were lucky she was with us for as long as she was. Until we meet again at the rainbow bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.  It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, water, and warm Spring weather. Those old and frail animals are young again. Those who have been maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

But there is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.  The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one suddenly runs from the group.  You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace.Your face is kissed again and again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
