Hummingbird Cake Protein Shake

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The other week I decided to have a little bit of fun on Facebook and I posed the question:

What flavor protein powder would you invent if you could come up with any flavor?

I do this kind of thing from time to time because I love seeing the creative responses. Angel food cake, banana chocolate, creme brulee. My personal entry  was hummingbird cake. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this treat, it’s pretty much a Southern thing from what I gather.

Paula Deen has a hummingbird cake recipe on the Food Network and it tastes even better than it looks. In an nutshell, it’s a spice cake that is filled with cinnamon, bananas, and pineapple and is quite delish. It’s typically frosted with cream cheese frosting and garnished with coconut flakes or nuts. Yeah, it’s all that and then some!

  • 1 scoop (34g) vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 (48g) banana
  • 1/4 cup (61g) pineapple pieces
  • 5 ice cubes
  • 1 cup water
  • Cinnamon, to taste
  • Pinch of unsweetened shredded coconut

Mix all ingredients except the coconut in a blender or Magic Bullet. Blend and top with the coconut shreds. Enjoy! Wine glass optional, but recommended. 😉

Makes 1 protein shake at approximately 202 calories – 21g protein, 25g carbs, and 2g fat.

This was probably one of the best protein shakes I’ve ever had! The flavor was spot on for hummingbird cake and I loved the frosty texture. Next time I might throw in a couple spoonfuls of Greek yogurt for more of that buttermilk taste, but this was one of my better protein creations for sure.

Hmmm, next up angel food cake or creme brulee? I need to post questions like this more often.
